Artwell Ndlovu of Sun Yet Sen in Kezi had pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Gwanda regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza facing the rape charge.

Regional prosecutor Johannes Tlou told the court that Ndlovu could not fathom that he had been dumped and went to his ex-lover’s homestead sometime in September 2013. The woman locked herself in, but Ndlovu forcibly gained entry into her room through a window and produced a knife and asked her to be intimate with him.

She tried to escape, but Ndlovu allegedly grabbed and dragged her into a nearby bush and raped her once.

Ndlovu threatened to kill her if she reported her ordeal to anyone. The woman confided in a fellow villager a couple of weeks later and the matter was reported to a member of the neighbourhood watch committee.

The matter was subsequently reported to the police, leading to the arrest of Ndlovu. The court also heard that Ndlovu had been very abusive during the relationship and would always force himself on her before spitting at her private parts saying she had a sexually transmitted infection.

Ndlovu had denied the allegations saying they were fabricated to fix him. In passing sentence, Mabeza took into account that Ndlovu was a first offender, but said the court takes rape cases seriously.

“You had no right to assault or frighten your ex-lover, and abusing women is uncalled for,” Mabeza said.
