THE ZIMBABWE National Students’ Union (Zinasu) has blasted the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) for demanding full tuition fees before students can be registered by January 31. Nust has reportedly asked all students to register by January 31 or risk deferring their studies.

But Zinasu national spokesperson Avoid Masiraha said the university should allow students to pay their fees in instalments in view of the harsh economic climate.
“How can Nust demand that students pay full fees before they can register?
“Education is a right and the government made it clear that no student should be deprived of it,” he said.
“Nust should take into consideration that students come from different backgrounds and should allow them to pay in instalments because it is hard to raise the full amount.”Fees at Nust range from $425 to $625 per semester for undergraduates depending on the type of programme.
However, Nust spokesperson Felix Moyo dismissed claims that the university had scrapped payment plans.
“Students should desist from associating with the media and it is not true that Nust has scrapped payment plans,” he said.

“They should come and meet the bursar and they would be told on what to do rather than to go to the media.
“Right now we are having a meeting concerning such issues.”
Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development minister Olivia Muchena could not be reached for comment as she was said to be attending a funeral.
