Corn Gold Mara (Midlands), Jumbo Stars (Bulawayo), Warthog and Support Unit from Harare came out top in the play-offs held in Harare on Saturday.

This followed the demotion of City of Harare, ZRP Harare Central, ZRP Bulawayo and Chinhoyi University last season.

Super League president Leticia Chipandu yesterday confirmed the promotion of the four teams to Southern Eye Sport.

“Following the demotion of four teams from the Super League last season, we held play-offs in Harare on Saturday which saw the promotion of Corn Gold Mara, Jumbo Stars, Warthog and Support Unit to the Super League,” Chipandu said.

“The competition was very stiff and very exciting. We have noticed that the Southern Region is playing very good netball.

“We are now inviting the promoted teams to join the rest of the teams when we hold our preseason tournament in Harare on February 22. We want the new teams to test the waters of the Super League before the season starts,” she said.

Chipandu said they had also used the play-offs to scout for more players for the national teams.

“The junior and senior teams will be participating in international tournaments so we selected 20 players to beef up the teams,” she said.

Competitions lined up for this year include the Region V Under-20 Youth Games to be held in Bulawayo in December, the Anoca Under-18 games set for Botswana in May, as well as African Championships also to be held in Botswana in September.

Chipandu said they were hoping to start the 2014 season on March 1. Zimbabwe Defence Forces are the defending champions while 2012 champions Nehanda Nyakasikana were runners-up.
