Headmaster-in-charge (athletics) for the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Peter Gambiza confirmed the calendar yesterday.

The calendar has dates for district, provincial and national events for this year with action starting on February 13 and 14 where Bulawayo Central will conduct their district competitions at a venue that is yet to be announced.

Founders High will be the school at charge.

On February 20 at Reigate, Northlea High will host the district cross-country competitions before Mzilikazi High hosts the field and track competitions the following day.

Pumula and Magwegwe High schools will host Khami district cross-country and field and tracks events respectively on the same day while Inyanda will be the school in charge.

On February 27 and 28 Imbizo will have competitions at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) grounds with Masiyephambili in charge.

The date and venue for the district competitions for Mzilikazi are yet to be announced while March 6 and 7 will see all districts battling it out at Nust in the provincial finals.

Athletes who will make it to the provincial team will travel to Marondera for the national Nash cross-country and track and field competitions slated for March 20 and 21 respectively.

Gambiza said the calendar was favourable to the schools, districts and the provinces as it allowed teachers to acquire coaching and officiating knowledge before having competitions.

“The calendar is fair and we hope it will help us come out with a very strong provincial team. We are starting all our competitions after the teachers have been taught coaching and officiating skills so we are hoping that every school will produce at least one athlete who will bring a gold medal in the national competitions in Marondera,” Gambiza said.
