Most Bulawayo schools had lined up various events on Friday including dinners and braais, but were forced to cancel them after a directive from the government came through.
Dan Moyo, the Bulawayo provisional education director, told Southern Eye on Friday that Valentine’s Day activities were never meant for children and as such were not legalised in schools.
Moyo said such ideas should wait until children are mature enough — emotionally and socially — to understand the commitment involved in having or being a boyfriend or girlfriend.
Robert Sibanda, the head of Masiyephambili Junior School, confirmed that he received a call from the Education ministry directing them to call-off events which had been pencilled for Friday.
The school intended holding Mr and Miss Valentine competitions. Some schools usual allow pupils to exchange roses and gifts on the day.
A parent Mthandazo Mkhwananzi said it was not right for children to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
