Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya confirmed that Kwazinkosi Moyo (7) of Mseseni village under Chief Nyangazonke and Brilliant Mpofu (14) drowned in the Gati stream.

According to Ngwenya, Kwazinkosi and Brilliant were on their way home from Silawa Primary School at around 3pm when they found the stream flooded and attempted to cross, but they were swept away.

Kwazinkosi’s body was found on the banks of the stream by Kelvin Moyo from the same village and he informed the boy’s father. However, Brilliant’s body has still not been found.

The matter was reported to the police who attended to the scene.

Ngwenya said cases of drowning were on the increase this rainy season as people attempted to cross flooded rivers.

He warned people against crossing flooded rivers and streams to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and also urged parents to accompany their children to school so that they do not risk crossing flooded streams.
