REIGATE District won the 2014 Bulawayo inter-district Paralymics competitions at White City Stadium yesterday. Ronald Moyo Sports Reporter They scooped 19 gold, seven silver and two bronze medals. On second position was Mzilikazi with 11 gold, nine silver and six bronze medals.

Bulawayo Central came third with nine gold, seven silver and nine bronze medals. On fourth place was Mbizo who got only four silver and two bronze medals.

Khami did not have any participants.

Bulawayo provincial assistant technical manager Bhekuzulu Khumalo said the aim of the games was to select the team that will represent the province in inter-provincial competitions set for April 10-14 in Marondera. He said he was confident the province would do well in Marondera considering yesterday’s performance.

He also said the province was banking on the basketball team looking forward to defend the title for the third consecutive year.

“We have improved especially in throws, so we are expecting medals in that area. In track events there are a number of promising athletes who can bring medals as well, but we are confident of our basketball team. I watched them playing and they have the potential to defend the title,” Khumalo said.

The competition saw athletes battling out in disciplines that included the intellectually challenged and visually impaired athletics and hearing impaired and intellectually challenged soccer, goalball, and wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis and netball.

The team of 168 athletes and 12 officials go into camp on April 7 at Evelyn Girls’ High School before leaving for Marondera on April 10.

Bulawayo Sports and Recreation Commission co-ordinator Sam Dzvimbu said he was impressed by the number of athletes who participated. He said there is light at the end of the tunnel in empowering people with disabilities through sport.

“When we started these games very few people participated. The number of athletes here could equal the number of athletes at national level. Even people are now supporting these games as you can see that there is a good number of people watching. It shows that we are heading somewhere,” Dzvimbu said.
