Fickson Khuluza Mathema told the court that on Monday night three inmates fought ferociously after one of them refused to execute an alleged plan to kill him after being sent by prison guards.

Mathema, who has been in and out of court on several theft cases, yesterday appeared before Bulawayo senior magistrate Sibongile Msipa for routine remand when he made the startling allegations.

Msipa remanded him in custody to May 13 and set his trial for May 20.

Soon after the magistrate gave his next remand date, Mathema raised his hand requesting to speak.

“There are a lot of things going on at Khami Remand Prison as yesterday (Monday) night some inmates were found with knives after they were sent to kill me,” Mathema claimed.

“There were three inmates who were sent by prison guards to stab me and two of them fought with the one who refused to execute the order they had earlier agreed to.

“I’m not safe at Khami Prison your worship.”

Mathema said inmates at Khami were being used in many illegal activities by prison guards such that he had decided not to eat prison food.

“Your worship, I request my relatives to bring me food to prison because I no longer eat from there,” he said.

“So you think they may poison you?” Msipa said.

“Yes, because the prison officers are no longer doing these things themselves directly, they use other inmates.

“The other inmates who witnessed what I am talking about are there, they can tell you,” Mathema said.

Msipa promised him that she would visit the prison to see and hear from inmates the goings-on at the prison.
