A NATIONAL University of Science and Technology (Nust) first-year student yesterday appeared in the Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court for stealing opaque beer popularly known as a scud from TM supermarket in the town.

Gabriel Mukunga (30), a Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying student, was fined $50 by magistrate Sangster Tavengwa for stealing the scud worth $1.
“Now you will pay for 50 scuds,” Tavengwa said while sentencing Mukunga. Prosecutor Monica Mungwena told the court that on June 25 at around 4pm, Mukunga went to TM supermarket where he bought one scud and went to an unknown destination.
After about an hour, he returned to the same shop and went to the liquor department and took a scud and headed for the exit without paying.
The security guard requested for a cash receipt and Mukunga allegedly showed him the one he was given for the earlier purchase.
The security guard quizzed Mukunga why the receipt showed a 4pm purchase when the time was after 5pm and asked him to lead him to the till operator where he had paid.
They then discovered that Mukunga wanted to use the same receipt and phoned Zvishavane police who arrested him.
