LINDA CHINOBVA OWN CORRESPONDENT A FORMER Bulawayo-based cop allegedly broke into a city police base and stole a radio set worth R14 250. Hlalani Moyo yesterday appeared before West Commonage magistrate Willard Moyo facing theft charges and was remanded to July 29. He was not asked to plead to theft and the State submitted that he should be examined by doctors to determine his mental condition. Prosecutor Mufaro Mageza told the court that on July 13 at around 4am, Moyo went to the police base in Mabutweni and stole an Avenga base set radio. He attempted to sell the radio set in the city centre, but was apprehended by members of the public who effected a citizen’s arrest after they realised that the radio belonged to the State. When Moyo was asked if he had complaints against the police, he said they had assaulted him and deprived him of food during his three-day detention. “Your Worship, the police thoroughly assaulted me, although I have no scars,” he said. “They detained me for three days and did not give me a single meal even up to now.” Moyo also told the court that he was an ex-cop who retired from the force due to mental challenges.
