Norman Moyo pleaded guilty to poaching charges when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate Olivia Mashaire on Thursday.

Moyo was initially slapped with a six-month prison term, but had two months suspended on condition he does not commit any offence involving trapping of animals within the next five years.

The remaining four months were further suspended on condition that he performs 240 hours of community service at Masase Hospital.

Moyo was also ordered to compensate the Rural District Council $4 500, being the value of the zebra and kudu killed.

Prosecutor Mncedisi Dube told the court that on August 1 a worker at Mkashi Plot in West Nicholson came across some suspicious footprints and notified the plot owner and the police.

They then tracked the footprints to Moyo’s homestead and a search was conducted leading to the recovery of 55kg of game meat and he was arrested.

The recovered meat was destroyed.
