DEFENDER Lawrence Mhlanga’s goal secured a point for Chicken Inn as they drew against Triangle in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Hartsfield Rugby Ground yesterday.

Triangle were first to score in the 14th minute through Hardlife Mavundi with Mhlanga equalising a few seconds later.

Chicken Inn remains on fifth position with 41 points while Triangle are in 13th place.

Both coaches, Chicken Inn’s Joey Antipas and Triangle’s Biggie Zuze, described the match as “scrappy”.Joey-Antipas-etched

“We would have wanted three points, but we struggled with the rhythm of the match,” Antipas said.

“We did not have clean passes from the midfield and the tempo of the game was a bit low. Maybe fatigue crept in because we played a match on Sunday and today (yesterday). It was a scrappy match and we found it difficult to deal with their long balls.”

Zuze said: “It is a good point for us, but we are still not far away from the relegation zone. It was a scrappy match although we did try to create chances and had we been accurate we could have scored two more goals.

“The one point will give us the edge when we play our next games at home. We hope to use home advantage.”

The dreary match saw both teams get a handful of opportunities at goal with the first coming in the ninth minute through Passmore Benard following a foul on Bhekimpilo Ncube just outside the box, but the shot went straight to goalkeeper Ronald Mudimu for Triangle.

Triangle’s Mavundi scored in the 14th minute when he rose high inside the box to head home a cross from Hillary Bakacheza.

But before they could settle, they were caught on the counter and Chicken Inn won a corner which Clemence Matawu directed to Mhlanga who made sure.

In the 48th minute, Mavundi’s header from a Cabby Kamhapa cross went wide while Matawu’s shot in the 57th was saved by Mudimu, in the only other serious chances created in the second half.
