The incident comes barely a fortnight after seven family members in Chief Mazungenye’s area, Bikita, were killed instantly by lightning after it struck two grass-thatched huts they were in on February 2.
Acting Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa referred all questions to Superintendent Paul Nyathi, who said he was yet to get the details.
Sources from the area said the incident occurred on Sunday at around noon when the now-deceased Shaiwai Mukuvashuro (29), Thangson Chimiti (29), Batanai Moyo (32) and Richard Chandavengerwa (33) were weeding in Phineas Shoko’s field.
They were with Ranganai Makuvashuro and Shoko when it started raining and they decided to seek shelter under a tree.
A bolt of lightning struck, killing the four and injuring the other two.
A headman, Aleck Ngwenya (25) witnessed the incident and alerted village head Chibwe Ndhlovu, who reported the matter to the police and rushed Ranganai and Shoko, who sustained serious injuries, to the nearby Neshuro District Hospital.
