The Iveco kombi travelling to Bulawayo from Gweru had 18 passengers on board.

A number of passengers sustained minor injuries and were taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for treatment.

Eyewitnesses claimed the driver was speeding. When the Southern Eye crew arrived at the scene, the injured were being ferried by an ambulance. The driver was being held by the police and he appeared to be still in a state of shock.

“I do not know what really happened, the tyre just burst and I hope the injured people heal soon,” he said. “We were all lucky to survive.”

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo was not reachable on his mobile phone.
