Tichaona Gumbati (27) of Mkoba pleaded guilty to four counts of theft when he appeared before Gweru magistrate Judith Taruvinga and was sentenced to two months in prison for each count.

He will serve the sentences concurrently.

Taruvinga said Gumbati deserved a custodial sentence because residents should not live in fear of hanging their clothes on washing lines.

In mitigation, Gumbati said he committed the offence because he was trying to make a living.

“When I took the clothes, I was just trying to make ends meet,” he said.

Prosecutor Pride Gomera had told the court that on April 12, Gumbati stole a blue bag from Violet Munovapei’s residence in Mkoba 9.

He then moved on to another residence in Mkoba 9 and stole a pair of blue jeans that were on a washing line.

Gumbati went to two more houses and stole a pair of tackies, a black dress, a pink sweater and a skin tight.

Police spotted Gumbati carrying the stolen bag after they were tipped off.

He was ordered to open the bag and police found wet clothes.  All the stolen items were recovered.
