The horrific accident occurred along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the driver of the Toyota Ipsum panicked after hitting the police cone and drum and encroached onto the opposite lane.
“What I can tell you is that the driver of the Ipsum panicked and got onto the oncoming lane, resulting in the driver of the truck hitting the Ipsum on the left side and then dragging it several metres,” he said.
Soldiers based at One Brigade Headquarters rushed to the scene and retrieved some of the trapped passengers from the wreckages of the two vehicles.
An eyewitness who identified herself as Virginia Ndlovu said the accident happened around 4.00am.

“When we asked the truck driver what had happened he said he did not even realise he had hit a car until he felt his engine struggling to pull,” Ndlovu said.
“He said after realising that an accident had taken place, he then stopped several metres from the police roadblock where the impact had happened.”
Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said one of the cars was trying to avoid a roadblock. She said all the six died on the spot.
