The rate at which lives and money are lost due to traffic accidents is forever increasing despite efforts being made.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that Road traffic accidents cost most countries 3% of their gross domestic product. The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) reports show that in 2017, a total of 1 838 deaths were recorded, while 10 489 people were injured in 42 430 crashes occurred. This translates to 153 deaths monthly. In December 2018 the festive season rush had 5 175 accidents resulting in 240 deaths and 1 357 injuries.

According to a 2015 ZRP Traffic national report, 96% of the road traffic accidents were attributed to human error, which encompasses speeding, inattention, misjudgement, negligent pedestrians and passengers.

Tripbuddy enables passengers to have some positive influence on drivers which reduces the risk of accidents. The mobile App automatically monitors, tracks and reports the driving behaviour. In the event of an accident, it has a panic button that reports accidents to next of keen, hospitals or sends a message to any number that you select prior to the journey. The vision behind Tripbuddy is to change the driving behaviour of public transport drivers and reduce the number of accidents and injuries per annum by more than 50% in Zimbabwe by 2022.

Tripbuddy operates by using Global Positioning System (GPS) and telecommunications technology to detect and report over-speeding speeding. It can also detect and report dangerous overtaking. The App also educates and encourages the passengers to exercise their rights. “Our law, statutory instrument 168 of 2006, demands that drivers display their qualifications, medical, defensive driving course certificate, license and retest. When you board a bus you can request to see these things. When drivers know that there is an App that is recording the driving they will adhere to the regulations. This goes a long way in addressing the accidents.
