A major milestone in this journey was achieved on 9 April 2026, where ZIHT hosted the Industrial Hemp Field Day in Mvurwi, showcasing Zimbabwe’s first 10‑hectare commercial hemp research project. This flagship initiative demonstrated the potential viability of industrial hemp under local conditions and provided critical data to support the scaling up of production.
Industrial hemp is increasingly being recognised as a high‑value, multi‑purpose crop with applications spanning from construction materials, textiles, paper, livestock feed and biodegradable products. The Mvurwi trials mark an important step towards unlocking a potential multi‑billion‑dollar value chain, positioning Zimbabwe to benefit from global market opportunities while strengthening local industries.
