Finalist teams from across Zimbabwe arrived yesterday in Harare, where they are preparing for two days of enriching activities leading up to the climactic quiz showdown at The Heritage Village.

AFTER months of intense academic competition spanning zonal and provincial rounds, the highly anticipated finals of the Old Mutual High School Quiz are officially underway.

Finalist teams from across Zimbabwe arrived yesterday in Harare, where they are preparing for two days of enriching activities leading up to the climactic quiz showdown at The Heritage Village.

Yesterday marked the first official day of the finals programme, with students participating in a full-day conference dedicated to personal development, leadership and learning beyond the classroom.

“The workshop, which has been carefully curated to complement the quiz experience, reflects Old Mutual Zimbabwe’s ongoing commitment to nurturing well-rounded, future-ready learners,” Old Mutual said in a statement yesterday.

“Key sessions include financial literacy through Old Mutual’s acclaimed ‘On the Money’ programme, career guidance and inspirational learning from Old Mutual staff, and youth and confidence coaching by Coach Taf.

“An educational tour of Liberation City is also part of the day’s activities, providing participants with a rich historical perspective as part of their holistic learning journey.”

This year’s edition of the quiz, Old Mutual said, was among the most competitive yet, drawing participation from schools in both urban centres and rural communities.

“The selection process has tested students’ academic knowledge, teamwork and critical thinking skills. Now, only the best remain, ready to showcase their brilliance on a national platform.”

The 30 finalist schools participating in this year’s finale are Fletcher, Chaplin, Anderson, Zengeza 1, Mufakose 1, St John’s Emerald, Northlea, St Columbas, Kwenda, St Mary’s Beitbridge, Mtshabezi, Sacred Heart, St Anthony, Pamushana and Masvingo Christian College.

There is also Nyanga High Marist Brothers, Emmanuel, Hartzel, Chipindura, St Alberts, Bradley, Goromonzi, Wise Owl, Rusununguko, Kariyangwe, Fatima, Lulu Adventist, Sandringham, Moleli and Nemakonde.

Old Mutual Zimbabwe said for over a decade, it had proudly sponsored the High School Quiz, aligning it with one of the company’s key responsible business pillars: education.

“The initiative reflects Old Mutual’s deep and sustained investment in elevating educational outcomes and supporting the personal growth of Zimbabwe’s youth.

“The Old Mutual High School Quiz is not just a contest; it is a celebration of learning, leadership and limitless potential,” said Lillian Mbayiwa, group marketing, public affairs and sustainability executive at Old Mutual Zimbabwe.

“As a business committed to shaping a better future, we see this platform as a meaningful way to invest in our youth and support their academic and personal development.”

Mbayiwa emphasised Old Mutual’s broader educational mission: “Education is a core pillar of our responsible business agenda and our goal is to nurture talent, unlock potential, and help  to shape a generation that is intellectually empowered and socially conscious.”

The final competition, set for The Heritage Village, will see Zimbabwe’s brightest high school minds compete for the national championship title and a range of valuable prizes.

The top four teams will walk away with a combined total of US$16 000 in cash prizes: US$7 000, US$5 000, US$3 000 and US$1 000 for first to fourth places, respectively.

“As the countdown to the finale continues, the Old Mutual High School Quiz stands as a testament to the remarkable spirit, ambition and potential of Zimbabwe’s youth.”
