A HARARE man appeared in court yesterday facing a charge of money laundering involving US$32 000.
Ragayi Chipanga, who was being represented by Moffat Makuvatseni, was remanded in custody by Harare magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka to today for bail consideration.
According to the State, Chipanga was living lavishly, buying multiple assets and developing his rural home in Village A, Nyahukwe area, Rusape, Manicaland. The authorities also alleged that he hosted an extravagant wedding at his residence.
A police team went to his home, arrested him and seized a Honda Vezel, a Toyota Probox and US$1 700. When questioned, Chipanga reportedly claimed that he acquired the assets through proceeds of gold prospecting in Bindura, despite lacking the required legal documents.
The vehicles and money were subsequently seized as proceeds of crime.
