Madhuku’s NCA says members abducted

According to Madhuku, the two were seized soon after leaving the NCA offices following a meeting to discuss issues surrounding the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3.

Two members of the National Constitution Assembly (NCA), led by constitutional lawyer Lovemore Madhuku, were allegedly abducted, assaulted and dumped in Highlands, Harare, shortly after attending a meeting at the organisation’s offices on Thursday.

NCA leader Madhuku confirmed the incident to NewsDay this evening.

The victims have been identified as Naboth Sirora and Innocent Taruona, both members of the opposition pressure group.

According to Madhuku, the two were seized soon after leaving the NCA offices following a meeting to discuss issues surrounding the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3.

He said the pair was taken by unidentified men to an unknown location, where they were assaulted before being abandoned in Highlands.

“We had just finished our meeting and two of our members were abducted and tortured. They were blindfolded and later dumped in Highlands without clothes,” Madhuku said.

The Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 has been the subject of intense public debate, with critics arguing that it seeks to extend Emmerson Mnangagwa’s tenure by two years without adhering to constitutional provisions.

Efforts to obtain a comment from police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi were unsuccessful, as he was not answering calls.

Last week, a member of the Constitution Defenders Forum—a civic organisation opposed to the planned constitutional amendment—was allegedly abducted and tortured by unknown men for reportedly participating in an anti-2030 campaign.
