HARARE, May 11 (NewsDay Live) — Police have urged parents, motorists, transport operators and school authorities to prioritise learners’ safety as schools reopen for the 2026 second term.
The appeal comes as thousands of learners travel back to boarding and day schools across Zimbabwe, a period often associated with increased traffic and road accidents. Authorities have previously recorded cases of speeding, vehicle overloading and night travel involving schoolchildren during school opening periods.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) called on all stakeholders to work together to protect learners.
“As schools open for the 2026 second term, the Zimbabwe Republic Police urges parents, guardians, transport operators, motorists and school authorities to prioritise the safety and security of learners as they return to school,” the statement read.
Police warned against night travel, saying it exposes learners to road accidents and criminal activities.
“Parents and school authorities are implored to ensure that learners do not travel at night, as this exposes them to road traffic accidents and criminal activities,” police said.
The ZRP also cautioned drivers against speeding, reckless overtaking, overloading, drunk driving and transporting passengers together with goods and luggage. Motorists were urged to exercise caution near schools and pedestrian crossings.
Authorities further advised parents and schools to use financial institutions for tuition payments instead of keeping large sums of cash on school premises, warning that this attracts criminals and increases the risk of armed robbery.
