KARIBA, Aug. 11 (NewsDay Live): At least three people have died and 54 others have been rescued after the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency’s (RIDA) Mbuyanehanda Ferry capsized near Long Island in Kariba this afternoon.
A NewsDay witness confirmed the three deaths, while rescue efforts were continuing at the time of publication.
The ferry was reportedly carrying about 90 passengers and was travelling from Kariba to Chalala Fishing Camp when it capsized.
Water and Inland Department Lake Captain Adan Nyekete confirmed the incident but said he was still awaiting further details.
Aqua rescue teams from the army and police had been deployed to the scene, while the Matusadona Conservation Trust dispatched a helicopter to assist with the operation.
Local authorities were also assisting in the rescue efforts.
The circumstances leading to the ferry capsizing were not immediately clear.
