HARARE, Aug. 18 (NewsDay Live) — President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei as one of 10 additional senators under Constitutional Amendment No. 3 (CAA3), further expanding his political profile within Zanu PF.

Tagwirei, a Zanu PF central committee member representing Harare Province, has in recent months emerged as an influential figure in the ruling party and has been linked to speculation over a possible bid for the vice-presidency.

The other nine appointees are Jabulani Sibanda, Godwills Masimirembwa, Mary Mliswa, Nokuthula Matsikenyeri, Lucy Chitaga, retired General Gibson Mashingaidze, Makosini Hlongwane, Brilliant Dube and Irene Mutumba.

Announcing the appointments in Parliament on Tuesday, Speaker Jacob Mudenda said the President had consulted the National Assembly before making the appointments.

“After consultation with the National Assembly, I have to inform the House that His Excellency, the President, is desirous of appointing the following as senators,” Mudenda said, before reading out the 10 names.

The appointments follow constitutional changes introduced through CAA3, which provides for additional senators.

CAA3, which was passed by Parliament in June, introduced a range of constitutional changes, including provisions that alter the composition of Parliament.

Tagwirei’s appointment gives him a formal position in the legislature as he continues to consolidate his standing within Zanu PF.
