POLICE in Bulawayo have raised concern over a sudden spike in car hijacking in the country’s second largest city.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the development, saying they have since recovered one of the vehicles.

She said police were also investigating two cases of armed robbery involving two motor vehicles which took place on different occasions.

“On the August 8 at around 5:15pm, the complainant, a male adult aged 33 of Sizinda, Bulawayo was seated on the driver's seat of his parked motor vehicle, a blue Honda Fit old shape, near a school in Emganwini when he was approached by three unknown male suspects.

“One of the accused persons opened the driver's door, produced an unidentified pistol, and pointed it at the complainant, ordering him to disembark from the motor vehicle,” Msebele said.

She said the complainant complied and the other two suspects joined in and the three got into the vehicle and drove away.

“A report was made to the police who attended the scene but the accused persons were not located,” Msebele said.

She said at around 9:30pm the police in collaboration with the public recovered the vehicle which was parked in Emasotsheni area along Nketa Drive in Emganwini with no ignition key as well as the front and rear number plates.

“The complainant opened the gate using a remote control and parked his motor vehicle in the yard. While still in the motor vehicle, he saw an unknown male adult wearing a black mask holding the gate to stop it from closing,” Msebele said.

She said the suspect produced an unknown pistol and ordered the complainant to disembark from the vehicle.

“The complainant complied and the accused person searched him, taking US$200 from his pockets, a cellphone, and a satchel containing US$800 and R6 000.

“The accused person then got into the complainant's motor vehicle and drove towards Nketa Drive in Nketa 9, Bulawayo.
