Kasambabezi-Binga marathon returns with expanded activities

THE eighth edition of the annual Kasambabezi-Binga Marathon, in Matabeleland North Province, is set to be held on September 27, with organisers promising a bigger event.The marathon's organising chairperson, Recent Ncube, said participants should for a mega event.

"This year’s event, to be held under the theme To run here is to be chosen, promises a blend of sport, cultureand community celebration,” Ncube said.

“We believe these features set the marathon apart from others in the region. This is the only marathon that fuses culture with sport, providing untampered surroundings and instilling a sense of joy in being yourself within your environment.”

Ncube, however, bemoaned the lack of funding but said the event will be held for unity.

“The marathon is currently the only annual initiative that provides direct cash injections into the district outside of government programmes," said Ncube.

According to the organisers, this year’s edition will also feature a cultural festival, provincial wellness programme, Act4Binga youth anti-drug and substance abuse campaign, as well as pool and netball tournaments, aiming to create a memorable day for both locals and visitors.

"We are confident that with adequate resources, the Kasambabezi Binga Marathon can match and even surpass similar events in other countries, thanks to its unique marriage of sport and cultural heritage," said Ncube.

The official said participants can choose from multiple running categories  5km, 10km, including wheelchair participants, 21km and 42km.

"For cycling enthusiasts, a 50km race is on the programme. Additional competitions include chess and checkers, ensuring there’s something for all ages and interests," Ncube said.
