Byo man hangs self over economic hardships

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele

POLICE in Bulawayo are investigating a case of sudden death, where a 54-year-old man from Magwegwe high-density suburb hanged himself citing economic hardships.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the tragic incident occurred on Saturday.

“The late Zebron Phiri’s neighbour, a female adult aged 78, visited him at his place of residence,” Msebele said.

“While having a conversation, Phiri highlighted to her that he wanted to commit suicide due to economic hardships and that his children are not taking care of him.”

She said Phiri told his neighbour that he was going to hang himself in his room and leave the doors and windows open so that people can easily find his body.

“The following day at around 7am, she checked on Phiri at his house and discovered that the doors and windows were open,” Msebele said.

“She called another neighbour to come and check with her if Phiri was in his room.

“They got into the house and discovered Phiri’s lifeless body lying on the floor facing upwards with a rope on his neck and the other part of the rope hanging from a truss.”

Msebele said Phiri’s neighbours notified his relatives and a police report was made.

“We encourage the public to take conversations about suicide and suicidal tendencies seriously and seek professional help for the concerned parties.”
