Vapostori sect leaders jailed over witchcraft claims

They were found guilty and sentenced to 12 months in jail on charges of assault and falsely accusing Ollys Mpofu of witchcraft.

TWO Vapostori sect leaders from Plumtree, Matabeleland South allegedly assaulted a passerby after accusing him of having goblins and a snake at his house.

The convicts Eriya Magumise (25) and Trevor Mandishona (29) from the Johane Masowe eChishanu Nyenyedzimomwe appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware.

They were found guilty and sentenced to 12 months in jail on charges of assault and falsely accusing Ollys Mpofu of witchcraft.

Nembaware conditionally suspended six months of their sentence.

The remaining six months committed to 210 hours of community service.

They were also ordered to pay a US$200 fine or face a month in jail.

Prosecutor Sheila Nyathi told the court that on August 30 at around 07:00 hours, the two accused Mpofu who was passing by their shrine and accused him of having a goblin and snake at his house.

They allegedly threatened to hit Mpofu with a knobkerrie and a machete.

A report was made leading to their arrest.
