GWERU-BASED land developer, River Valley Properties, is in the process of establishing a dumpsite for diapers in Woodlands suburb to ensure a clean environment in the area.
Speaking during a monthly clean-up campaign, the company’s chief executive, Smelly Dube, said used diapers had become an eyesore and a potential health hazard as a result of uncollected refuse.
“What we have done as River Valley is to engage women in Woodlands so that we agree on a specific dumping site for disposing of diapers, where they will be collected by a truck we will provide,” Dube said.
“So we are saying people should properly dispose of the diapers to a central point, where they will be collected before eventually being dumped at the council’s dumping site.”
Dube also said some houses in the suburb were still using the bucket system to dispose of human waste as they were not connected to sewage and water lines.
“On that issue, we have since engaged council to take drastic action against those not connected to sewage and water and continue to use unhygienic methods such as the bucket system,” she said.
“... we will continue to engage and partner beneficiaries of our housing projects to ensure a clean environment is achieved.
“As we clean, we will be educating the residents on the need to prevent the spread of diseases that can be caused by a dirty environment.”

Woodlands Residents Association chairperson Obert Rupanga said residents welcomed River Valley’s approach saying it encouraged them to keep their areas smart.
“This is quite a noble initiative and we really want it to continue not only on national clean-up days, but on a regular basis,” Rupanga said.
