ZIMBABWE on Friday commemorated the 22nd anniversary of the passing on of national hero and late former Vice-President Simon Vengai Muzenda, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa describing him as the soul of the nation.
Muzenda, who hailed from Masvingo, died on September 23, 2003, aged 80.
He was declared a national hero and was buried at the National Heroes Acre.
Muzenda’s political journey was rooted in the nationalist struggle, with early involvement in the African National Congress in 1957, followed by key roles in the National Democratic Party, Zapu and eventually Zanu.
He was instrumental in the co-ordination of liberation efforts, particularly cross-border operations with Mozambique and was widely respected for his resilience in the face of colonial repression.
His underground operations, including the secret mobilisation and distribution of incendiary materials from mining centres, positioned him as a crucial link in the liberation movement.
Following the attainment of independence in 1980, Muzenda transitioned into key government roles, serving as Foreign Affairs minister, Deputy Prime Minister and later Vice-President.
“As Zimbabwe commemorates his passing on, the nation reflects on his significant contributions to its history and formation,” Mnanaggwa said in a statement.
