Chirumanzu chieftainship hearing date set

In a High Court application Julius Chimbi cited Local Government, Public Works and National Housing minister Daniel Garwe, Midlands Provincial Chiefs Assembly and Abraham Nyamande as respondents.

THE Chirumanzu chieftainship wrangle has taken yet another twist, with the High Court in Harare setting next Tuesday as the date of hearing.

In a High Court application Julius Chimbi cited Local Government, Public Works and National Housing minister Daniel Garwe, Midlands Provincial Chiefs Assembly and Abraham Nyamande as respondents.

“Take notice that the above court application will he heard and determined physically by the High Court of Zimbabwe at Harare before Honourable Mrs Justice Mungwari on Tuesday October 7, 2025 at 1100 (hours) or so soon thereafter as counsel may be heard,” the notice read.

Chimbi’s bone of contention is that Garwe and the Midlands Provincial Chiefs Assembly failed to be neutral adjudicators in handling the nomination procedure that saw Abraham Nyamande nominated as candidate for the chieftainship.

In March this year, Garwe, however, said due process was followed in nominating the candidate.

He said the Nherera house was the last to provide a candidate for chieftainship (the late Chief Gerald Mudzengi) and that in the spirit of rotation, it was now the Simba house’s turn to the chieftainship.

Chimbi said minutes of meetings held in October 2020, seen by Southern Eye, showed that the Nherera and Mutizirapi houses agreed and selected him, Julius Chimbi Chigegwe, as the next heir to the throne.

Their argument, according to the documents, is that over the years, the Nherera house has had few chances to the chieftainship, hence in the spirit of fairness, nominated Chigegwe to be the next Chief Chirumanzu.
