BULAWAYO received ZiG$2million for road works from the Zimbabwe National Road Authority (Zinara) in 2024 against US$15million that the city needed to maintain the existing road network.
The city’s road network continues to deteriorate after going for years without proper maintenance owing to underfunding challenges and neglect. According to latest council minutes, mayor David Coltart said US$15 million was needed to maintain the current existing road network.
“Zinara had disbursed an amount far less than US$15 million,” the minutes read.
“In 2024, Zinara paid ZIG$2 million for roads in the City.
“Road maintenance expenditure was mainly payable in foreign currency.”
Coltart requested that Zinara fund the rehabilitation of Steeldale, Khami, Victoria Falls roads and other major roads in the city.
“There were busy roads that needed urgent rehabilitation,” the minutes added.
“The city’s water drainage system was very poor. Most of the road network lifespan had been reduced by poor drainage.”
