Gweru-based land developer River Valley Group of Companies has joined hands with residents in Woodlands phases 1 and 2 suburbs in an initiative that has seen the company and residents regularly cleaning up the residential areas.
Speaking at a clean-up exercise held in Woodlands phase 2 suburb, River Valley chief executive, Smelly Dube, said there was a need to engage beneficiaries of the housing scheme in ensuring a permanent clean environment in the suburbs.
"As the land developers we are saying you can't just build houses and end there," Dube said.
"As we heed the government call for the national clean up exercise every first week of the month, we will continue to engage and partner with beneficiaries of our housing projects to ensure a clean and sustainable environment is achievable.
"As we clean we would be educating the residents on the need to prevent the spread of diseases that can be caused by a dirty environment."
Woodlands Residents Association chairperson, Obert Rupanga, said residents welcomed River Valley's approach, saying it has encouraged them to "always" keep their areas smart.
"This is quite a noble initiative and we really want it to continue because it is not done only on national clean up days but on a regular basis,"Rupanga said.
Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association director, Cornelia Selipiwe, emphasised the need for continuous clean up campaigns.

"It's rare to see land developers coming back to housing beneficiaries in such a noble cause and we urge this cooperation to keep the environment clean to continue," Selipiwe said.
