Veld fire leaves Masvingo families homeless

Families in Masvingo North were left counting their losses after a raging veld fire swept through the area this week, destroying homes, food reserves and household property.

SEVERAL families in Masvingo North were left counting their losses after a raging veld fire swept through the area this week, destroying homes, food reserves and household property.

Masvingo North MP Brian Mudhumi on Wednesday visited the affected families to assess the damage and offer assistance to some of those left homeless.

He said the situation was dire, with many families now in need of urgent support to rebuild their lives.

“I visited families in Masvingo North whose homes were devastated by a veld fire, leaving them in desperate circumstances,” he said.

“Although many families were affected, I was able to assist six of them.”

Mudhumi, who said government was working on measures to support all affected households, appealed to the corporate sector, churches and individuals to provide immediate relief assistance.

“The government is working on plans to support these families, but in the meantime, I am appealing to well-wishers who are willing to help during this challenging time,” he said.

The veld fire, which spread rapidly due to strong winds and dry vegetation, left several homesteads in ruin and destroyed grazing land and crop fields.

Local authorities have since urged communities to exercise extreme caution and adhere to Environmental Management Agency fire prevention regulations.

As Masvingo North recovers from the veld fire tragedy, the community’s resilience and unity remains a beacon of hope in the face of adversity.
