THE arts industry and political fraternity have expressed shock following the tragic passing of Nkulumane legislator and renowned poet, Desire Moyo, who died in a horrific car accident yesterday morning.
Moyo, a respected cultural poet and parliamentarian, was travelling with other legislators when the vehicle they were travelling hit an elephant.
Tsholotsho North MP Libion Sibanda, who survived the crash, described the terrifying moment when the car lost control.
“We were together when the accident happened. I was asleep when I heard the car braking and making lots of noise,” he said.
“That’'s when I woke up frightened and everything became dark. I don’t know how it fell, but I remember it swerving towards trees.
“When the car stopped moving, Desire was already unconscious. Then the next thing, I came out trying to look for help. I then went back and opened for other MPs.
“We succeeded in removing them from the car, but we couldn’t remove the late MP. We eventually removed him, but he was no more.”
Gwanda MP Desire Nkala expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling it a blow to both Parliament and the arts community.

“I am short of words about this and am also praying for the injured for a speedy recovery,” he said.
“This marks a huge loss to us as the political family. It also marks a huge blow to the arts industry.
“He was unapologetically bold when it came to his poetic work.”
Moyo was not only a politician, but also a highly regarded figure in Zimbabwe’s creative circles.
He mentored many young poets and spoken word artists and was instrumental in nurturing talent through platforms such as the Pumula Royal Arts and Community Awards (PRACA).
PRACA founder Happy Mpofu described Moyo as a mentor and father figure to many in the creative space.
“He wasn’t just an artist, but a father figure to some of us who were still young in the industry,” Mpofu said.
“He played a pivotal role in PRACA in the previous two editions. Last year, he was our guest of honour.
“Personally, I’m hurt and heartbroken because every time we met, he always gave me great advice on how to go on this art journey.”
In a Press statement, the Office of the MP Nkulumane Constituency Information and Publicity Desk confirmed his passing.
“It is with deep sorrow and profound shock that we announce the untimely passing of Desire Moyo, the Member of Parliament for Nkulumane Constituency,” the statement read.
“Moyo tragically lost his life in a car accident in the early hours of Friday morning.
“Further details will be shared in due course as we join the family, friends and the people of Nkulumane in mourning this devastating loss.”
Other legislators Sibanda, Madalaboy Ndebele, Senator Rittah Ndlovu and Sethulo Ndebele were rushed to the hospital.
Moyo’s sudden death has shocked the nation, with tributes continuing to pour in from fellow politicians, artists and citizens who were impacted by his passion, dedication and authenticity.
