A two months old Gweru toddler was kidnapped in broad day after her mother left her in the custody of her elder sister aged six in the city centre.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko on Tuesday confirmed the incident.
"A two months old baby girl was snatched and kidnapped by an unknown person at Edgars Stores veranda in Gweru Central Business District on November 15 at about 1340 hours,"Mahoko said.
"Reports have it that the mother, Faith Jakaza, aged 26 had just finished breast-feeding her baby and left her in the custody of her six year-old sister after she went to buy bananas from a nearby vendor.
"On returning after a few minutes the mother discovered that her older daughter was now without the baby saying she had been snatched away.
"Jakaza shouted for help looking for her baby, but she was nowhere to be found."
Mahoko appealed for anyone with information that can help locate the baby and the suspect to report to any nearest police station.
He urged mothers and persons in custody of babies and children to always keep them under close monitoring.
