THE World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCG) has embarked on a drive to clean and rehabilitate learners in Bulawayo schools through its WeloveU clean-up campaign.
WMSCG representative James Makanwamkaka said while the campaign focused on cleaning physical spaces, it also aimed to “clean up” behaviour and restore the image of learners who have gained a negative reputation.
He said the programme began with learners from Milton High who had been associated with street fighting and loitering in the city centre.
Makanwamkaka said the church engaged school authorities, who welcomed the initiative and selected a group of boys to take part.
“One of the boys who joined us last year when he was in Form 2 has significantly changed his attitude towards environmental awareness and has even recruited others,” he said.
He said the initiative would also be great at mending the frosty relationship between schools.
“Gifford and Milton have been traditional rivals but somehow it got out of hand and become violent physical fights and full-blown hatred among the students,” he said.
“It gives them something in common. Something that will bond them and encourage a friendship between the schools, hopefully this will then spread across the city because that is the whole idea initially.”
