Gas explosion destroys property worth ZiG700K

“We did attend the fire, but I’m not happy with what was saved, honestly, the fire was reported very late, when the damage had already been done,” Bulawayo chief fire officer Mhlangano Moyo said.

A GAS cylinder explosion triggered a fire that destroyed property worth ZiG700 000 at a home in Morningside, Bulawayo, on Sunday, with the Bulawayo Fire Brigade managing to avert an even bigger loss.

Bulawayo chief fire officer Mhlangano Moyo confirmed the incident, saying although firefighters saved a significant portion of the property, late reporting limited what could be rescued.

“We did attend the fire, but I’m not happy with what was saved, honestly, the fire was reported very late, when the damage had already been done,” he said.

Moyo said the property was extensive, adding that while his team managed to save about six high-value vehicles and other assets, a considerable amount had already been lost by the time it arrived.

He said the property was valued at about ZiG1,8 million, with loss estimated at ZiG700 000, while items worth approximately ZiG1,1 million were saved.

“The roof of the building was affected and the fire had started spreading towards a big servant quarters, but firefighters managed to contain it just in time,” he added.

He confirmed that a nine-kilogramme gas cylinder had exploded, but the team was able to contain the situation.

“Two gas tanks were rendered safe, along with a solar installation explosion. If we had delayed, the whole house could have been ripped apart.

No injuries were recorded.
