Pharmacist advises cutting starch to manage diabetes

A BULAWAYO-BASED pharmacist has urged people to adopt nutrient-rich diets and significantly reduce starch consumption in the evening, citing better health management for individuals with diabetes.

The advice was given at the Zimbabwe Diabetes Association monthly educational meeting held on Saturday in Bulawayo, which brought together individuals living with diabetes and healthcare professionals.

Diamond Pharmacy pharmacist Dean Bandile Dube provided insights into diabetes medication and daily management practices.

He emphasised the importance of dietary adjustment, particularly in the evening.

"If you must eat starch at night, keep it to the size of your palm. It’s better to increase your intake of protein and fibre instead,” Dube advised, encouraging attendees to revise their meal plans towards more balanced, diabetes-friendly diets.

Leonard Moyo national educator for Zimbabwe Diabetes Association shared his personal experience of adjusting evening meals.

“When I eat only a small portion of sadza at night, I often wake up around midnight needing to eat again,” he said.

Moyo encouraged working individuals with diabetes to be open about their condition in the workplace.

“Do not be secretive; be open with your management or superiors,” he advised.

Bulawayo Diabetes Association chairperson Violet Moyo lamented low turnout despite the valuable information shared.

“I hope we all learnt something today,” she said.

“What disappoints me is the number of people who attended.

“The knowledge shared was incredibly insightful.”

The session reinforced the Zimbabwe Diabetes Association’s ongoing commitment to community education and support for diabetes management.
