Bulawayo replaces 'Give Way' signs

The City of Bulawayo has advised motorists and all road users of a significant change to traffic signage across the city, as part of a long-term programme to enhance road safety and align with regional standards.

In a public notice issued by town clerk Christopher Dube , the council announced the progressive removal of ‘Give Way’ (YIELD) signs at various intersections. These are being systematically replaced with ‘STOP’ signs.

The initiative is being carried out under the Statutory Instrument 41 of 2016 (SI 2016-41), which empowers the Transport and Infrastructural Development minister to regulate traffic signage in conformity with the Sadc Road Traffic Safety Manual Standards.

This programme has been ongoing since September 2017.

“The installation of the ‘STOP’ sign follows a technical assessment which identified the need to improve visibility, regulate right-of-way more effectively, and reduce the risk of accidents at this intersection,” Dube said in a statement.

Authorities emphasised that a ‘STOP’ sign carries a mandatory requirement distinct from a ‘Give Way’ instruction.

Motorists must bring their vehicles to a complete halt, with the front of the vehicle in line with the sign or behind the marked stop line, before proceeding only when it is safe to do so.

The council noted that the new signs are being complemented with appropriate road line markings for clarity.

“The City of Bulawayo appeals to road users to exercise caution, adhere to the updated signage, and comply with all traffic regulations for their safety and that of others,” Dube said in the statement.

Motorists are urged to be particularly vigilant when approaching unfamiliar or upgraded intersections, as the changes are being implemented progressively citywide.
