The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) hosted the 31st annual South African Music Awards

The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) hosted the 31st annual South African Music Awards (SAMAs) this past weekend at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng.

Southern Eye was exclusively invited to the prestigious event, where the stars came out to shine.

In a show of artistry and creativity, organisers delivered a spectacular night of song and dance—but first, it was lights, camera, fashion.

Media personality Kuhle Adams stole the spotlight on the red carpet as she engaged with A-listers who came to see and be seen.

As celebrities, nominees, and guests filtered in, the energy reached a crescendo when the show kicked off live on Sabc1.

It was hosted by former Real Goboza presenter Siyabonga Ngwekazi and influencer Pamela Mtanga, whose fiery chemistry brought a magical spark to the stage as they seamlessly linked segment after segment.

Gospel legend Jabu Hlongwane, who told this publication that Zimbabwe is his second home due to the overwhelming support he receives here, delivered a moving tribute performance to several fallen music stars.

Retired soccer star Teko Modise also made a surprise appearance as a guest presenter, sending the crowd into frenzy.

This year’s SAMAs carried a subtle theme of “giving people their flowers while they can still smell them.”

Each winner not only received a trophy, but was also handed a bouquet, while floral graphics adorned the screen throughout the broadcast.

Makhadzi, after scooping her award, made a dramatic exit—leaving part of her dress on stage—to wide applause for her well-earned recognition.

The event offered several takeaways for awards shows across the continent: delegation is key.

A dedicated PR team managed the media efficiently, and the programme reflected cultural diversity and inclusion.

Budget allocation was also strategic—investing in quality sound, professional lighting, high-definition cameras, and attendee comfort.

Unlike some local events where ticket tiers offer little practical difference, the SAMAs provided a full buffet at no extra cost, including vegetarian options, alongside an open bar serving premium beverages.

Invited guests, especially those participating in the production, received gift bags at the end of the evening, followed by a “thank you” email the next day.
