Residents of Bulawayo's Ward 25 are celebrating a new wave of progress, crediting the relentless work of their councillor and the development committee appointed in 2023.
Development committee chairman Tshaha Nleya told Southern Eye that the community was pleased with the visible improvements.
“There has been expansive development since taking office in 2023,” Nleya said.
“As you can see, we are constructing trenches and overhauling the ward drainage system.
“For years, residents suffered from flooding due to poor drainage, but that is now being addressed.”
He attributed their progress to the ward retention funds received from the city council.
“The ward retention funds are crucial for financing projects within the ward. This has enabled us to complete multiple initiatives,” Nleya explained.
He added that this progress has increased resident participation in ward meetings, where they are educated on maintaining ward property and encouraged to pay water rates to bolster the retention fund.
Ward 25 compassionate team member Zwelitsha Moyo praised the new office's dedication.
“The new ward council office is making vigorous efforts, applying pressure to ensure we receive the funds needed for development,” Moyo said.
“They are proving their commitment to us. The poor drainage was once a major complaint, but now it’s becoming a thing of the past.”
Moyo also noted the office is encouraging residents to attend monthly Bulawayo United Progressive Residents Association meetings, which have been very helpful.
Resident Ambrose Sibindi expressed relief and appreciation.
“We are seeing great development,” Sibindi said. “This rainy season, people’s properties will be safer.
“We appreciate the frantic efforts to spruce up the ward, and it’s now clear where the ward retention funds are being spent.”
