Girl commits suicide over O’ level results

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalamga Msebele confirmed the case of sudden of a female juvenile as result of poisoning. 

A 16-YEAR-OLD girl committed suicide after discovering that she only passed two out of seven subjects in last year’s Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) Ordinary Level examinations. 

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalamga Msebele confirmed the case of sudden of a female juvenile as result of poisoning. 

She said: “On January 16 at around 9:30pm, the girl checked her results on the Zimsec portal (and) upon discovering that she only passed two subjects out of seven subjects, she was devastated and cried. 

“After a while, she calmed down, rushed to the kitchen where she took Dichlorvos Insecticide from a cupboard which was meant for killing cockroaches and drank it. 

“While she was drinking [the poison], she was seen by one of her cousins who screamed and snatched the insecticide at the same time advising others of what had happened.” 

Msebele said the girl’s cousins tried to assist by giving her milk and charcoal.  

was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital, where she was admitted and later passed on.  

“We urge young people to always speak to parents, teachers, counsellors or close friends whenever they feel overwhelmed emotionally as taking their own lives isn’t a solution.” 

Msebele also urged parents not to keep pesticides, poison or toxic chemicals within the reach of children.
