The mining town of Shurugwi in the Midlands province is undergoing significant infrastructure development, with shopping malls, hotels and residential expansions transforming the local landscape.
Among the most notable projects is the town’s largest shopping mall, which has reduced the need for residents to travel to Gweru for goods and services.
New suburbs are also emerging in the surrounding mountainous areas, while a scenic hotel near the central business district is enhancing Shurugwi’s appeal as a regional hub.
Speaking during a media tour on Wednesday, Shurugwi Town Council secretary Archibald Ncube said the development reflected strong investment inflows.
“We have done well in terms of investment. We have attracted over US$5 million over the past five years,” he said.
“We now have a shopping mall that has reduced travel to Gweru for shopping. We have also approved several residential stand expansions. We are moving in the right direction.”
Shurugwi North Member of Parliament Joseph Mpasi said the community was beginning to benefit from the improved business environment.
“We are happy that the community is also benefiting through job creation,” he said.

Midlands Provincial Affairs minister Owen Ncube said the government was impressed by the developmental projects, which
aligned with its industrialisation agenda.
“I have noted with admiration that most of the world-class infrastructure here in Shurugwi is indigenously owned, drives heritage-based socio-economic transformation, creates jobs, aligns with urban renewal and smart city concepts, and provides affordable, quality services to residents,” Ncube said.
