THE City of Bulawayo has announced a city-wide water supply interruption due to recurring power outages at critical pump stations, affecting raw water delivery to the city.
The disruptions highlight Bulawayo’s vulnerability to power failures and the fragility of its water infrastructure, underscoring the urgent need for backup systems and emergency planning to prevent a prolonged water crisis.
According to town clerk, Christopher Dube, the power outages started on February 11 following faults on electricity transformers at uMzingwane and Inyankuni Pump Stations.
“The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company is prioritising the restoration of a stable power supply to these strategic installations,” he said.
Dube said the two pump stations deliver a combined 40 megalitres of raw water per day to the treatment works.
“Additionally, Rochester and Cowdray Park Pump Stations, which deliver water to the Magwegwe Reservoir, have been experiencing power supply interruptions since February 12, affecting reservoir levels and treated water availability,” he said.
“Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to use water sparingly during this period to help maintain available supplies while restoration efforts continue.”
