Mater Dei Hospital appeals for solar equipment upgrade

Deputy Minister Yeukai Simbanegavi

MATER Dei Hospital is appealing for assistance to upgrade its ageing equipment following the commissioning of a 1 300-solar panel plant at the facility.

Hospital chairperson and medical director Adolf Macheka made the appeal on Tuesday during the commissioning of the solar plant, which was funded through Old Mutual’s renewable energy funds.

The project cost US$810 000.

While expressing gratitude for the solar installation, Macheka highlighted several critical areas requiring urgent attention.

“We are seeking and appealing to you to come join us in looking at certain critical areas such as replacement of three hot-water boilers for the wards,” he said.

“We now are saying that we have the power, but we need to use it efficiently.”

Macheka revealed that the hospital urgently needs to replace its main theatre industrial autopads, which are over 25 years old and consume excessive power.

Other essential equipment required includes new radiography equipment, a medical waste incinerator and anaesthetic machines.

Energy and Power Development deputy minister Yeukai Simbanegavi said renewable energies were the foundation of modern economies.

“Reliable, affordable power drives industry, strengthens hospitals and schools, supports small businesses, and raises the quality of life across our communities,” Simbanegavi said.

She noted that such projects demonstrate the contribution of renewable energy to national energy requirements.
