A MODERN science and computer laboratory has been commissioned at Mawabeni High School in Matabeleland South province as part of the Independence Day legacy projects.

The initiative forms part of a broader programme that will see the establishment of 40 science and computer laboratories across the province.

The project seeks to strengthen access to quality education and improve competence in science, technology and innovation subjects.

Government officials said the initiative was aligned with efforts to ensure that development in the province extends beyond Maphisa, the host of this year’s Independence Day commemorations.

Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister Albert Nguluvhe said the project responded to long-standing calls by communities in the province.

“As a province, we have long called for science laboratories to bridge the gap in higher education access,” he said.

“The President has responded to that call and within the next few years, the impact will be evident.”

Special Adviser to the President responsible for monitoring and implementation of government programmes and projects Joram Gumbo said the laboratory represented long-term, people-focused development.

“The importance of this project is that it is a legacy project and it will remain here benefiting the people for eternity,” he said.

“Education is important and if you have a basic education, your future is guaranteed to be good.

“This project speaks to the President’s mantra that no place will be left behind.”.

The facility is expected to close a long-standing infrastructure gap that has hindered the effective teaching of science subjects at Mawabeni.

School development committee chairperson Dumisani Luphahla expressed optimism about the impact of the laboratory to the community.

“Our children will now learn science subjects and this will improve our area,” he said.

School head Licksen Moyo said the project represented a major milestone for the institution.

“This is a significant development for our school. It will improve learning outcomes and give our learners access to quality education. We are grateful to the government,” he said.

This year Independence Day celebrations will be held under the theme Zim@46 — Unity and Development Towards Vision 2030.
