For many, art is a hobby.
But, for Nxayezwe Wayne Khumalo, it is life itself a language through which he feels and connects with the world.
From poetry and acting to music and portrait drawing, the multi-talented creative has shaped his gift into a powerful form of expression.
Currently making waves with his detailed portraits, Khumalo said his passion started early.
“I started as a toddler, but I vividly remember that when I was doing Grade Three, that’s when I realised that apart from acting and poetry, I could also draw,” he said.
What began as childhood fascination slowly transformed into a serious craft.
After completing his Ordinary Level studies, he decided to sharpen his skills professionally at Mzilikazi Arts and Craft Centre.
“I specialised in fine and commercial art. There, I learnt the technical foundations that would later define the realism and emotional depth seen in my portraits today,” Khumalo said.
He recently completed a commissioned drawing, recreating a client’s photograph with painstaking detail.
“I tried my level best to capture every detail I could see,” Khumalo said.
Although many artists embrace digital platforms, Khumalo remains deeply connected to traditional mediums.
“I am best with acrylics and pencils. I do not know digital art because I have never tried it,” he admitted.
Through facial expressions, shading and detail, he hopes audiences interpret deeper meanings in his work.
“I hope my work can convey and decipher the encrypted messages behind the pictures,” he said.
Khumalo, using a pencil sketch, a poem, a song or a stage performance, has continued to use creativity to tell stories, preserve emotion and inspire others to embrace their gifts.
