The Victoria Falls Mayor’s Cheer Fund raised close to US$9 000 last year as the annual charitable initiative prepares for its 2027 edition, with more vulnerable families expected to benefit.
Preparations for the fund have started, with the organising committee setting December 4, 2026 as the launch date.
Mayor councillor Prince Thuso Moyo has already established the board of trustees comprising community members from across Victoria Falls.
The Mayor’s Cheer Fund is an annual initiative run by the City of Victoria Falls to mobilise businesses, residents and civic organisations to support vulnerable people, particularly children, elderly people, orphans and other vulnerable groups.
Last year, 40 vulnerable families received grocery hampers, up from 26 families in 2024.
The beneficiaries included eight people with disabilities, 17 widows, five orphans and vulnerable children and 10 elderly people.
More than US$2 000 was also paid towards school fees for needy children.
The fund’s activities included a 50-kilometre environmental walkathon and a soccer tournament.

The walkathon, which enters its third year, attracted more than 100 participants last year and included a clean-up along the highway from Matetsi, with development partner organisations and Hwange Rural District Council taking part.
Corporate organisations also donated refreshments, fruits and other items towards the activities.
The soccer tournament is also expected to grow this year, with more than 20 social soccer teams expected to participate. Registration has already started.
Last year, 14 social soccer teams, including Buhera RDC, participated in the inaugural Mayor’s Cheer Fund Cup, which was won by Insika Lodge FC.
The soccer tournament final will be held a week before the launch, while preliminary knockout matches will take place during November.
The City of Victoria Falls expressed appreciation for the continued support towards the initiative.
“The Victoria Falls City Council is grateful to the support that the business community, residents and partners continue to render to the Mayor’s Cheer Fund,” the council said.
The increase in beneficiaries from 26 families in 2024 to 40 in 2025 comes as the city prepares for another round of fundraising and community support activities.
