A 60-year-old Bulawayo man has been sentenced to an effective 18 months in prison after attacking his wife with a machete, repeatedly striking her on the head and back.
Bornwell Tshuma was convicted of attempted murder when he appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Shingai Mutiro.
Tshuma was sentenced to 36 months’ imprisonment, with 18 months suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period.
He will, therefore, serve an effective 18-month term.
Prosecutor Jethro Mada told the court that on March 30 at about 5am, Tshuma went to his wife Thokozile Ndlovu’s workplace to confront her over her failure to return home the previous night.
He accused her of having an extramarital affair before repeatedly striking her on the head and back with a machete.
“Tshuma accused the complainant of having an extra-marital affair and struck her several times on the head and on the back with a machete,” Mada said .
Ndlovu reported the incident to the police, leading to Tshuma’s arrest.

She sustained injuries during the attack, and medical reports confirming the injuries were produced in court as evidence.
